Careers at Downing

If you're passionate about seeking a career that combines purpose and growth, explore the exciting opportunities at Downing

Why Downing?

As a responsible investment firm, we are committed to investing in companies and assets that make a positive impact on society and the environment, as well as being well governed, our values reflect this commitment.

Joining our team means embracing a culture of support, where colleagues rally together to achieve shared goals and encourage each other's professional growth. We value transparency and directness, promoting open communication and providing clear pathways for advancement. With a bold and ambitious mindset, we encourage our employees to challenge the norm and think innovatively. Want to know what that feels like day to day? Our colleagues tell it in their own words in the following video.

"We’re friendly, humble and ambitious. We work hard, play hard, and never lose the family feel. What sets us apart is our long-term mindset. We won’t compromise our beliefs, and we’re not solely driven by profit, - we’re here to make the right decisions for the long run."
Tony McGing
CEO
"Our ambition is simple: to be a place where people genuinely want to build their careers. That requires more than competitive pay; it means fostering a culture where wellbeing is protected, progression is real, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive, realise their potential, and make a meaningful contribution."
Shruti Patel
Partner, Head of People
"Downing is collaborative, entrepreneurial, and fun. It’s a place where culture genuinely matters, and people are supported to grow. The work is diverse, impactful, and no two weeks feel the same. Since joining in 2018, I’ve seen us grow across five countries, but we’ve kept the spirit that makes Downing special. It’s still the best place I’ve worked."
James Weaver
Deputy CEO
"Downing is ambitious, supportive and straightforward - it's like being a kid in a Lego shop, with endless ways to build. The culture is down to earth, fun and genuinely collaborative, with strong social ties that make it a place you want to spend most of your working life. I’ve recruited people who’ve grown into leaders, and it’s been brilliant watching the building blocks evolve as the business grows."
Kostas Manolis
Deputy CEO

Our recruitment process

We want every candidate to have a fair, straightforward experience with us, and to feel properly considered at every stage. The process typically includes at least one in-person interview, the chance to meet members of the team, and a task or assessment relevant to the role. We want you to get a genuine sense of the job, and we aim to get a fair, rounded view of you.

We're deliberate about keeping our process objective and consistent, with a view to fairness and having the most effective outcome.

We are also committed to building a diverse and inclusive team; so please let us know if you require any adjustments at any stage of the process and we will endeavour to accommodate as far as possible.

Developing employees

Our people are at the heart of Downing's success, so investing in your growth isn't an add-on, it's core to how we do business.

We want you to own your development, and we back that with genuine support. Your line manager helps you work out where you want to go, a conversation we keep coming back to, not just at your annual review.

People learn here in lots of ways: through day-to-day experience and real projects, learning from colleagues, coaching, mentoring and structured training. Whatever shape it takes, the aim is the same - room to grow, stretch yourself and build a career that keeps evolving.

There's also structured support for anything more formal.

Being sustainable

We want everyone at Downing to feel they can be themselves, be treated fairly, and reach their full potential. We believe that different backgrounds, perspectives and ways of thinking make us a better business and make Downing a genuinely more interesting place to work.

We're committed to equality of opportunity and creating an environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

We take health and wellbeing seriously, offering a range of benefits and wellbeing initiatives, alongside a balanced approach to flexible working that combines in-person collaboration with the option to work from home where possible.

Taking care of our people is an important part of how we think about long-term sustainability.

Investors in People: Gold Standard

In May 2024, we were awarded Gold by Investors in People, an achievement earned by just 28% of organisations. It recognises that we don’t just have the right policies in place - our people bring them to life. Everyone plays a part in making work better, every day.
