Alpha Schools (Holdings) Limited

Development capital

In June 2011, our VCTs invested £2 million in Alpha Schools to support the growth of an established group of four preparatory schools across England and the acquisition of a fifth school in Buckinghamshire.

Each school offered small class sizes and a warm, family-style learning environment, with an inclusive approach to academic achievement for all abilities.

This investment allowed us to support an established business with a clear strategy for growth.  During the lifetime of the investment, profitability grew nearly two-fold and our funds made a successful exit in August 2015. This resulted in a total return equivalent to 1.7x the original investment and an effective internal rate of return of 15%*.
